Art collection is a prerequisite for social recognition and as a mode of self-definition. Thus, it is quite likely that Indian and Chinese art will be sought after. The question is: what is the symbolic value of Chinese (contemporary) art globally (and in India). We can take a leaf from the “Orientalisation” of Chinese and Japanese art in the 19th and early 20th Century. Besides the serious art collectors manuals and guidebooks prepared by taste professionals advised middle- and upper-class women that Japanese screens, Chinese cabinets, Oriental rugs, vases, and prints should all be regarded as the sine qua non among the French settees or Dutch bedsteads in the American home.
